Ultima Online
I started MMO gaming back during MUDS and eventually I ended up playing UO when it came out. Back in the day not only did you have such immense freedom of choice with your character, you could literally do anything in the game from killing other players to stealing from them. What I'm trying to say here is that UO was based on rules that governed the world and not rules that governed every action a player could take. Now, while I miss old UO just as much as the other vet players I still enjoy Ultima Online.
What's great about UO is the skill-system. There are 50 skills, and you can raise skills anywhere from 1 to 100. If you find Power Scrolls, you can raise them up to 120 even. So with 700 skill points, you have to make choices and believe me when I tell you that choosing betwee 50 very interesting and useful skills is tough. Luckily, there's a lot of information to help you on the Internet and a very helpful and active community. There are always things to do. And if you are in a good guild, there are tons of stuff to do in groups that could never be done by yourself. And that's what a good MMO does is bring people together and foster community.
