Star Trek Online

star trek online space flight sreenshotStar Trek Online is set in a world where Romulus was destroyed and the Federation seems to be at war with almost every major non-Federation species out there. In this sci-fi MMORPG from Cryptic Studios, players can pioneer their own destiny as Captain of a Federation starship. Or, they can become a Klingon Warlord and expand the Empire to the far reaches of the galaxy. As a trekkie and mmo fan I really wanted this to work out, but atm, it is left wanting, it does have an initial wow factor, getting to fly inside a Star trek mmo, but that gloss very quickly wears off.

star trek online planet klingon sreenshotMajor problem with this game is the name : Star Trek. This isnt Star Trek, it's most like Star Wars , there is no "TREK" in this game, it's all combat and fighting.Aside from the fact that you don't have meaningful, challenging group content, the missions are almost ridiculously pushed towards combat. Every even remotely related contact to alien races comes down to "Defeat Tzanakara Raider Squadrons 0/5".The other problem with the game is that you're doing basically the same thing with a few small variations on the theme. I have to admit, I enjoyed it at the start but after 37 levels of the same it gets old.The game is light on content, with many folks capping after a week or two and finding there is really nothing to do, unlike most mmo's when the meat of the game begins.

If you like Star Trek type space battles, you will love the game. If you want a fast paced ground FPS style ground game go eslewhere. Space is where the game shines. Ground on the other hand is a bit clunky. There is no real crafting system,so its major negative for me. Your bridge officers can be trained up and equiped like NPCs in Bioware's games, but they have no personailty and you can't talk to them. It's an unfinished game that lacks polish and can be completed very quickly.  It caters to the casual player who has ample surplus cash. It has some very nice eye and ear candy, but lacks substance.
